Char and Buddy’s Weekend

CB_featured

Saturday the 9th was Charlene’s bachelorette party as well as Buddy’s bachelor party, and Sunday the 10th was their engagement party. I love that Char and Buddy are so inseparable that they had their bachelor(ette) parties on the same day, starting separately but ending together! I dove in to organizing Char’s, which was easy because she thought of lots of fun things to do and had lots of great friends coming to town to enjoy them with her!

We started the party at House of Air in San Francisco! I’d never been trampolining before and Char had never been to House of Air. They have a huge building full of trampolines! We met several of Char’s friends – Nicole (her sister), Maulik (from high school) and his wife Sarjita, Patrick, and Sridhar. Bouncing up and down is positively exhausting, and it’s very strange to walk on a solid floor afterwards. Char showed me how to do tricks. She weighs nothing and bounces really really high!! I also tried trampoline dodgeball, which I am positively terrible at.

We drove in my car from House of Air to our hotel, the SF Marriott Marquis. I had the only car – Nicole was kind enough to go home and meet up with us later, but I drove 6 people to the hotel! Of course we passed about 5 cops, and SF city drivers tested my patience all the way (my patience failed miserably… stupid taxis, grr!). And my poor little standard transmission VW Jetta had to go up Webster street with the weight of 6 people. But we made it, with no traffic tickets! (Quote: “That’s ok, if we get a ticket we can all split it. And it will still be cheaper than taking a cab!”)

At the hotel we met Steph and Melissa, who beat us there by ages due to city traffic, and we dove into our dinner clothes before walking to Café Bastille at Belden Place. We’d eaten there once before for Melissa’s birthday, and Char was eager to order the mussels again.

At dinner we gave Char her bachelorette presents, which included copious decorations (tiara, leis, beads, glow bracelets, veil, and magic wand!). I ordered the pepper steak, and was sadly only able to taste the Zinfandel we ordered with dinner. Most everyone ordered dessert!

After dinner we went back to the hotel, and ordered drinks from the lounge on the 39th floor. The 39th floor was really high! You could see the other tall buildings in SF, and all the way to the Bay. I stayed away from the windows and tried not to look down – yikes! Char ordered a martini of some colorful sort, and was somewhat drunk by the time we left. Stephi, Melissa, and I went back to the room to go to bed while the others headed out to meet Buddy’s bachelor party at Tres Agaves for tequila.

The hotel was super comfortable, and I slept reasonably well. In the morning we tried to find a Peet’s for some caffeine, but were thwarted by Sunday mall hours. We drove to Japan Town and ate brunch at Sweet Maple, where so many people showed up (~20) that the restaurant seated our party at two separate tables. I had french toast that tasted super sweet and maple/orange-y. Others ordered bacon and omelettes that looked delicious.

11 of us then headed to Pika Pika. For those of you who don’t know what that is – the Japanese have taken your average photo booth and added flare! These booths are much larger, often with seats, monkey bars, or other platforms to pose on, and you can select different backgrounds for your photos that are green-screened in. To make things more exciting, all of the instructions are in Japanese (we only let Buddy touch the controls, because he somehow manages never to screw it up!). After you pose for 6 photos, you go into a second booth to digitally decorate them with stamps and sparkles and writing and everything else you could possibly think of.

After Pika Pika we drove to Fort Mason, found parking (be impressed), and walked to the Renegade Craft Fair. This is a fair that happens several times a year, where lots of artists sell handmade crafts. I didn’t buy anything this time, though a few others found some cute things. We all got fresh squeezed lemonade.

Around mid-afternoon we left the city, and I headed to Buddy’s house with Char and Stephi. We stopped at the taiyaki place in San Mateo (taiyaki are these little bite-sized waffles shaped like fish, with chocolate or nutella or vanilla or other flavors inside) and picked up a few schools of fish – yum!! At Buddy’s Erik and Buddy helped me change the headlight in my Jetta (thank you!!) and we threw on our “semi-formal” clothes for the engagement party. We had to google semi-formal in order to figure out what to wear – cocktail or ankle-length dresses! It was so strange seeing everyone dressed so nicely, we made sure to photo-document.

The party began with drinks and snacks in the courtyard, and then we were seated for an exceptionally yummy dinner. Char’s dad and sister both gave toasts, and their pastor (am I right?) blessed the engagement ring and sang a song. There was a live band playing swing music – this was positively torture to listen to while wearing 4-inch heels, so I walked to my car to get my socks! I lindy hopped with Buddy after dinner. Stephi and Erik danced a little too, and Erik wants to come to WNH sometime soon. Yay!

It was so awesome to have Melissa and Stephi in town TWO weekends this month! I was sad when they had to leave – I want to keep them! Thanks everyone for being such awesome friends!! And congrats to Char and Buddy!!
